Here Comes the Walk-A-Thon!
The DCE Walk-a-Thon (WaT) is a big event and our major fundraiser of the year. The money raised from the Walk-a-Thon funds things such as improvements in classroom technology and school facilities, enrichment activities such as field trips, funding “artists in the school” programs, and many other items and programs the district does not fund. The added bonus is that walking/running laps allows the students to be directly involved in how much money we collect for the school, and provides the added bonus of health and fitness. What Do I Do? To help us reach our goal of raising $50 per student, help your child approach family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to get flat rate and/or per lap pledges (suggested minimum $1 per lap). Ask your employer about matching pledges. Most students complete 7-14 laps, though a few fast runners complete around 20 laps. After the WaT you will be notified how many laps your child walked, and per lap pledges can be collected. On Wednesday, October 14th send your student(s) to school in comfortable walking clothes, and come to school yourself to volunteer (see below)! What's New This Year? Pledge online: click the “pledge online” button anywhere in the PTO website to be taken to a secure site for quick and easy credit card pledges (flat pledges only). We will also be sending the link via PTO e-newsletter and Mrs. Teske’s Darby Creek e-news so you can easily forward it to your family and friends. Online pledging will be available from October 1st until October 29th. Pledge on paper: Write down the pledges on the pledge sheet and collect checks and/or cash; turn in all in together in an envelope marked with your child’s name and “Walk-A-Thon” after October 14th. How Do I Volunteer? At the top of this page, click on the "VOLUNTEER for the Walk-A-Thon" button. You will be taken to a Sign-Up Genius page to sign up. The walking schedule is also posted at the top of this page, so you can see when your child is walking. We will NOT be sending home a form to sign up to volunteer – you MUST go to the button above to sign up for a time to mark laps (you must also have a volunteer badge from the school district office). Walk-in volunteers on Walk-a-thon day are welcome, but it is a great help to us if you let us know you’re coming beforehand! What Kind of Prizes Could my Student Win? Every student who brings in any pledge money at all will be recognized with their own “paw” on the display board by the gym. Students who bring in $50 or more (our goal for each student), will be eligible for raffle prizes donated by the teachers. These prizes are always highly valued by the children and include things like lunch with principal, doing a craft with a teacher, etc. For every $5 over $50 that a student brings in they will earn another raffle entry. Students who bring in over $100 will receive a framed picture of themselves with the principal, Mrs. Teske. The top money raisers will receive gift cards to local stores like Toys R Us, The Little Ice Cream Shoppe, and Play It! There are also prizes for the classes that raise the most money, and have the highest percentage of students participate. |
